ABOUT KYBELLA

Even a little extra fat in the upper neck area can cause the appearance of a “double chin.” This can be bothersome to both men and women alike. The excess pockets of fat under the chin (also known as the submental area) could be caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics that lead to a weaker chin and jawline for an undefined profile. To address this common issue, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kirk Moore is proud to offer a new way to eliminate neck fat at Plastic Surgery Institute of Utah. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Kybella is the first nonsurgical treatment for submental fat. The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid that acts like the natural DA in the body to break down and absorb fat. Once it is injected under the chin, you may see a noticeable reduction in fat. When the fat is destroyed, the cells cannot return. You will be able to enjoy your new slim profile and strong jawline for years to come.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

The best patients for Kybella injections have excess fat in the upper neck (submental area) that causes a double chin or unwanted fullness. This injection treats stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be reduced with normal weight loss methods due to genetics, aging, or other conditions. If you are at a healthy weight but healthy diet and exercise have not helped to reduce the fat in your upper neck, Kybella may be the right treatment for you. While Kybella can address small to moderate amounts of fat in the submental area, larger amounts of fat may require surgical liposuction at Plastic Surgery Institute of Utah.

PROCEDURE TECHNIQUE

Kybella is performed during an in-office appointment. Dr. Moore will generally apply a numbing ointment to the treatment area, if requested, after the skin has been cleansed. The procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes and involves several small injections targeting the submental area. Some patients may only need one treatment to reach their goal while others may need multiple treatments spaced 3 – 4 weeks apart.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Kybella doesn’t require anesthesia so you will be able to leave the office as soon as you feel comfortable enough to resume your normal activities. You may have temporary bruising, numbness, or swelling under your chin, but this should not last longer than a few days. Contact our office immediately if you are experiencing any unusual side effects, such as facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or if your smile is uneven. While the fat cells that are destroyed do not return, the remaining cells can become larger so you should make sure to maintain a steady weight after your Kybella injections to prevent new pockets of fat from forming. Optimal results following this treatment leave your neck looking sleeker and tighter, and your profile will be more defined.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does Kybella cost?
The price of Kybella treatments will depend on how many treatments are needed. During your consultation, a customized plan will be created to fit your goals and budget. A member of our team can also discuss payment options with you during your consultation.

How does Kybella work?
The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxycholic acid, works to break down and destroy fat cells in the body. After they are destroyed, these fat cells will not grow back. Therefore, additional Kybella treatments should not be necessary once you have reached your desired outcome.

Can Kybella be used to treat other areas of the body?
Currently, Kybella is only available for treatment of the area below the chin. Kybella has been proven to effectively reduce the appearance of a double chin. Kybella has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on any other areas of the body.

Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?
There are a few factors that could make you ineligible to receive a Kybella treatment. You must be over the age of 18 years old, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and cannot have any infection at the treatment site. Prior to receiving treatment, you should share any health concerns and your medical history with your injector so that they can decide if you can safely receive the treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your consultation, a customized treatment plan will be tailored to meet your needs. Most often, patients will receive between 2 – 4 Kybella treatments before achieving their goals. Kybella treatments must also be spaced out at about one month apart. You should not get more than six treatments in total.
