ABOUT LOWER BODY LIFT SURGERY

A lower body lift is a body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fat to raise and reshape certain areas of the body affected by weight loss or pregnancy. This surgery targets the mid and the lower body, including the abdomen, buttocks, lower back, flanks, and upper thighs. Depending on how much skin removal is required, a circumferential 360 incision may be made, which allows the greatest amount of skin excision and lift. This is a major surgery that is performed to redefine a patient’s entire lower body. Plastic surgeon Dr. Kirk Moore has special training with skin removal surgeries. In many cases, this surgery at Plastic Surgery Institute of Utah in Midvale, UT allows patients to not only reach their weight loss goals but to complete their overall transformation with a taut figure that looks healthy and normal.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

Ideal candidates for this surgery are usually ones who have lost a significant amount of weight and are battling new challenges related to excess skin. These challenges consist of loose, wrinkled skin on the buttocks and upper thighs, hanging skin on the abdomen, and saggy skin throughout the midsection. If you are a candidate for this procedure, it is important to have realistic expectations, which can be discussed with Dr. Moore during your initial consultation. Scarring is an effect of this surgery due to the large incisions that are made. This procedure also has a lengthy recovery compared to most cosmetic surgeries so it is important to plan accordingly if you work or have small children. It is necessary to be at your healthy goal weight when considering this surgery.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia in our on-site operating room. The surgery time can be quite lengthy, lasting around 4 – 7 hours. The incision is typically placed along where a belt would be worn, which is why it is known as a circumferential 360 or in some cases, a beltectomy. Once the incision has been carefully made by Dr. Moore, liposuction will remove all excess fat and loose skin will be gently trimmed away. Then the remaining skin will be pulled tight and secured with sutures. Compression garments will be placed over the incisions to help create a slimming result, as well as to control bleeding, bruising, and swelling.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A lower body lift is considered a major operation. It takes most patients around two weeks to resume easy activities, and in some cases, up to six months before a return to more vigorous movements, such as aerobic exercise. Dr. Kirk Moore or a member of his staff will provide very detailed instructions and information on wound care so that scarring is minimized as much as possible. While the recovery can seem lengthy, the results are extraordinary, leaving patients with a smoother, tighter body devoid of debilitating, loose skin. Patients who receive this surgery are able to live their lives without being weighed down by a mass of excess skin, allowing them to experience life fully.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does a lower body lift cost?
The price of a lower body lift procedure will vary from patient to patient. During your consultation, Dr. Moore will discuss a treatment plan to fit your needs and budget. Plastic Surgery Institute of Utah accepts many payment methods, including low-interest medical financing to help make your treatment as affordable as possible.

Will I have visible scarring?
Several factors can contribute to the visibility of scarring you have after a lower body lift. Dr. Moore designs incision patterns so that they can be easily concealed either along natural skin folds or to be covered up by undergarments. He or a member of his team will provide you with aftercare instructions to allow your incisions to heal properly. This way, the scars will heal flat and eventually blend with your normal skin.

What can I expect during recovery?
After a lower body lift procedure, you may experience some swelling and bruising around the treatment areas. Follow-up appointments will be necessary so Dr. Moore can keep track of your healing. It is important to contact our office if you experience any signs of an infection or have any concerns.

When should I consider getting a lower body lift?
If you are considering a lower body lift, schedule a consultation with Dr. Moore to learn more about the process and when it may be right for you to get one. You should be at or near a healthy, stable weight since gaining or losing a significant amount of weight after a lower body lift may alter your results. Prior to surgery, Dr. Moore will also perform a physical examination to ensure that you are healthy enough to recover properly.
